  Emergence Research Grant

Paris City supported Magali Bonifacie, a team member, through his research grant Emergences (2009-2013), for her project which aims to better constrain the thermal and chemical evolution of the oceans and the terrestrial atmosphere ~ 635 Ma, i.e. the last major environmental crisis before the explosion of life; the so-called Marinoan Snowball Earth (e.g. Bristow et al.,  Nature 2011).

To shed new light on these questions, Magali Bonifacie implemented the new thermometer " Δ47 " ( first laboratory measurements in November 2012 ). This tracer allows both the temperature of formation of carbonates and composition of the fluid it interacted with to be estimated, thus avoiding weaknesses of approaches based only on the analysis of isotopic compositions of oxygen. Today this tool is applied to other major environmental crises , such as K/T crisis or Toarcian anoxic event.
