Earth Modelling techniques for petroleum reservoirs are in constant evolution. A critical step in earth modelling is the 3-D representation of geological facies variations within the reservoir. A number of techniques are currently used by the industry to achieve this goal: approaches based on indicator variograms, truncated gaussian functions, object-models, or emerging techniques based on transiograms. These methods will be presented and their respective strengths and weaknesses will be discussed.
