Since 2007, INERIS is monitoring, with BRGM, the induced seismicity in the abandoned bituminous coal mines of Provence (Gardanne), France.
This micro-seismic activity, felt by people locally, is correlated in space and time with the progressive flooding of the ancient mine, due to variations in the pumping activity.
However, the mechanisms involved are not yet understood. For the most recent crisis, the seismic records of a local array of surface and borehole stations are been analyzed by INERIS and BRGM in order to better locate the events, in particular in depth, define their magnitude, and infer their triggering source from their spatio-temporal characteristics. In the present contract, our team is involved in the follow up of this research: assessing the ongoing work, discussing the methodologies and the results, and contributing to the planning of future work on the data
