The class focuses on the techniques of marine geosciences (mapping, seafloor exploration and sampling, seismic, magnetic and gravimetric methods). These techniques are taught in class, then demonstrated in several topical study cases, using actual data (volcanic and seismic hazard in Mayotte, hydrothermal and tectonic processes at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, structure and age of the Wharton Basin, submarine landslides in the Antilles....). The class can be taught in english if non-french speaking students register. Students will have two homework assignments based on the case studies.
A general understanding and basic grasp of the techniques used by marine geoscientist... and a better knowledge of current concepts regarding the topics addressed in the case studies.
Students should have a basic knowledge of plate tectonics processes in the oceanic domain. Guidance will be provided to students who would lack this knowledge but are ready to do some home learning to catch up.
