StackProf: measuring on-fault and off-fault displacements from deformation maps

Principle

StackProf is a software developed at IPGP by Laurent Pourchet, which allows to perform measurements in images from stacked profiles. It is part of the MicMac project − an open source photogrammetry software developed at IGN. It was developed with the aim of measuring the displacements at the surface induced by earthquakes along faults, but the field of its applications can be wider.

The processing of optical images to precisely align the images acquired before and after an earthquake is carried out using tools such as MicMac. Then, image correlation is used to calculate, for each pixel, its displacement from one image to another, producing a map of the horizontal deformation at the surface (separated into an E-O and an N-S component). This is typical StackProf input data.
If Digital Surface Models (DSMs) of both epochs are produced during the process (i.e. processing of stereo acquisitions), the difference of the DSMs can be added to StackProf to also measure displacement in the vertical direction.

Profile stacks are used instead of single profiles in order to increase the signal to noise ratio.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I edited a number of profiles. Will the positions of the linear regressions (and other settings) be saved and accessible if I reopen the project in the future?
A: Yes, provided you save the project after editing and don't change any of the box settings, once the project has been reloaded. When you reload a project, you have to recalculate the profiles, because they are not saved. But any edits made to these profiles will be retrieved from the project file.
Q: I loaded a project but all the changes I made to the profiles disappeared. Is all my editing work permanently lost or is there a solution?
A: First, are you sure you haven't changed any of the box settings? If you did or are unsure, close the project without saving and open it again.
If the changes have been lost, you can recreate a project file from an export of your profile measurements (whether or not it contains the profile curve information), if you have one. If you have many profiles, it probably makes sense to use a script to do this. Just make sure you don't make things worse by backing up your project file first, so you don't overwrite it.
