  Post-doctoral position in numerical simulation of rapid geomagnetic variations

• Contract: 2-year full-time contract to be filled from 1 October 2022. Remuneration according to experience from €2553 gross per month.

• Missions: The post-doctoral researcher will join the 4DEarth European project currently funded by the European Space Agency (ESA). This project consortium gathers researchers at the IPGP, IsTerre (France), DTU Space (Denmark), University of Leeds (UK) and Royal Observatory of Belgium. The research takes place within a vigorous present context that has recently led to the discovery of rapid hydromagnetic waves in Earth’s core. These have been observed by virtue of global and continuous magnetic field measurements from the satellites of the ESA Swarm mission. This is an exciting time for Earth’s core geophysics, as the existence of these waves has been previously overlooked, and much remains to be investigated concerning their physics and the geophysical information that they carry.

• Activities:

The post-doctoral researcher will take part to three-dimensional numerical simulation of the wave dynamics, in comparison with observations and theory within the consortium. The post-doctoral researcher will therefore leverage on the leading-edge expertise of IPGP in numerical simulation of core physics, and on the fruitful collaborative network of the 4DEarth project.
