Our knowledge of the Earth's mantle structure is almost only constrained by the tomographic images. The challenge is then to interpret those models in terms of density, temperature or composition anomalies. A way to discriminate between all these contributions is to combine elastic and anelastic models. It is thus important to improve both. So I will first show how seismic attenuation can bring new insights on the Earth's mantle structure. I will present attenuation measurements and then I will focus on an attenuation mechanism, namely the effect of phase transitions. Finally, I will show how we are trying to improve our knowledge of the elastic structure of the Earth's mantle and I will present a new 3D isotropic shear velocity model of the Earth's mantle based on both normal mode and surface wave data.
