Subduction dynamics

For my post-doc, I am investigating the dynamics of free subduction into the Earth's mantle using the finite-element code Fluidity [1,2] developed by Rhodri Davies, Stephan Kramer, Cian Wilson and the AMCG. I also work with Saskia Goes and Huw Davies in Imperial College London and in Cardiff University.

Subduction dynamics of an old (100 Myr) downgoing plate on the left, that deforms on a viscosity jump at 660-km depth. The video shows the viscosity field (in Pa.s), with the time annotated in millions of years.
