Are Earth System models adapted tool to study the response of soil organic carbon to climate change?

Earth System Models (ESMs) are important tools to understand the climate dynamic in particular in the context of climate change. ESMs coupled different modules impacting the climate system including land surface schemes. Those land surface schemes represent flux exchanges between land and atmosphere including water/energy and carbon. Soil respiration is the major CO2 flux from land to the atmosphere but the representation of the mechanisms controlling such flux is largely debated by the community. During this seminar, I will first present the classical approach used by ESMs and explain why such schemes are limited and debated. Then, I will present the recent development done to solve this limitation in ORCHIDEE the land surface scheme of the IPSL-ESM. These new developments are related with representation of a vertical distribution of the C, transport within the soil column, lateral fluxes of dissolved organic carbon and the use of carbon isotopes to better constrain the model.
