The Red Sea is transitioning from continental rifting to seafloor spreading. It is considered a valuable modern example that can potentially reveal aspects of the geodynamics of this process and of its consequences, in particular, how evaporites are deosited and subsequently deform. This talk will outline developments in our understanding of the nature of the crust (oceanic or stretched continental), how movements of the thick Miocene evaporites are linked to crustal structure and the unusually subdued seismicity of the northern half of the Red Sea rift.
