Kévin Migadel

Contenu / Travaux

Kévin Migadel is a research engineer in volcanology currently affiliated with the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris (IPGP). His work sits at the intersection of volcanology, data science, and machine learning, with a focus on leveraging advanced computational methods to improve volcanic monitoring, ash characterization, and insights into magmatic systems. He completed advanced training in artificial intelligence and data science (e.g., at Telecom Paris / ENSTA Paris) and has since integrated those skills into Earth sciences applications. As a volcanologist-engineer, he investigates volcanic ash particles (texture, morphology, color, crystallinity), volcanic eruptive processes, and the internal structure of active volcanoes using data-driven techniques. Among his recent contributions, he is a coauthor on “A repository-hosted dataset of volcanic ash particle images and features”, a 2025 open-access dataset paper which provides a broad, reproducible resource of 11,808 particles across 53 samples from 13 volcanoes. He also gave a seminar at IPGP titled “Revealing the presence of magma lenses using machine learning” (December 2024), demonstrating his active role in exploring subsurface volcanic structures via computational approaches. He is involved with IPGP’s projects such as VolcAshDB, a volcanic-ash particle database combining optical microscope images and physical/texture descriptors, which supports the broader volcanological and hazard community volcashdb.ipgp.fr. Beyond research, Migadel's work bridges disciplinary boundaries by coupling domain expertise in Earth science with modern AI tools and open data practices. He aims to push the frontier of how machine learning can enrich volcano monitoring, ash hazard assessment, and ultimately improve early warning systems.
