The recent availability of global terrain and crustal databases with information on a layered geometry and consistency of the Earth's crust, from the surface topography and bathymetry down to the crust-mantle interface has brought the topics of spherical harmonic analysis of global terrain data and evaluation of topographic/isostatic gravity field models back to the forefront of scientific discussion. The significance of these tools becomes more apparent by the fact that the aforementioned databases are released with ever growing spatial resolution, thus are linked to the high and very high frequencies of the observed gravity field. At the same time they permit a thorough analysis and validation for both structure and consistency of the involved crustal distributions. After presenting an overview of the underlying theory we focus on the analysis of global crustal database CRUST 1.0 and the related gravity field signal and Moho signature implications.
