“Fête de la science” 2023 at the national magnetic observatory in Chambon-la-Forêt

Why does magnetic North move? What happens when the Sun triggers a magnetic storm? Discover the Earth's magnetic field on 6 and 7 October 2023!

“Fête de la science” 2023 at the national magnetic observatory in Chambon-la-Forêt

06 October 2023 - 07 October 2023

Observatoire magnétique national, Carrefour des 8 routes, 45340 Chambon-la-Forêt

14:00 - 18:00

Events, General public, Observatories

In the heart of the Orléans forest, the magnetic observatory at Chambon-la-forêt has been measuring changes in the Earth’s magnetic field since 1936.

Networked with other observatories around the world, and thanks to satellite measurements, we can study a multitude of phenomena taking place inside and outside the Earth. From the Earth’s core to the interaction between the Sun and the Earth, the study of the magnetic field enables us to understand the complexity of these interactions, which play a fundamental role in making our planet habitable.

Find out more about the activities of this observatory, the only one of its kind in mainland France, and discover everything that can be discovered through magnetic measurements.

Programme

  • 2.30 pm: Origins of the Earth’s magnetic field
  • 3.15 pm: In search of the lost magnetic field
  • 4.00 pm: The magnetisation of the Earth’s crust
  • 4.45 pm: Can we see auroras in France?
