Content / Work

The activity of geological systems such as faults and volcanoes can be viewed as resulting from the collective behavior of smaller elements—fault patches and slip barriers, dykes, sills and conduits. Although most of the time this activity is so complex that it evades any effort at predicting its long-term evolution, some systems seem to organize to produce simple, predictable patterns of activity.

My research aims to detect such patterns in geophysical observations (seismicity, deformation...) and understand the conditions of their emergence in terms of observable properties of these systems (geometry, internal dynamics, stress landscape...). Through simple, statistical mechanics models faithfully calibrated to geophysical models and observations of these natural systems, I seek to develop conceptual tools for understanding the degree of predictability of catastrophic events, such as giant earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
