Research topics
My research focuses on understanding how human activities disrupt the biogeochemical cycles of metallic elements in continental environments. I investigate the sources, transformations, transport and fate of trace metals and engineered nanoparticles in soils, surface waters and urban systems, with particular attention to their chemical speciation, mobility and environmental reactivity.
A first major research axis concerns metallurgical pollution, where I use stable isotope geochemistry as a powerful tracer to distinguish natural versus anthropogenic metal sources and to quantify the dispersion of contaminants downstream from smelters and industrial sites. This work has contributed to establishing metal isotopes as robust tools for tracking pollution pathways at the watershed scale.
A second axis addresses mining-related contamination, especially in ultramafic and metal-rich contexts. Through combined laboratory experiments, field investigations and isotopic exchange modeling, I study the speciation, bioavailability and long-term mobility of metals such as chromium, nickel, lead and zinc in soils and sediments impacted by mining activities. These studies aim to better assess environmental risks and to improve predictive models of metal behavior in contaminated environments.
My third research axis focuses on the environmental fate of engineered nanoparticles in urban systems. I develop innovative approaches based on isotopically labeled nanoparticles to investigate their transport, aggregation, transformation and persistence at environmentally relevant concentrations, from wastewater and stormwater to surface waters. This work bridges environmental geochemistry, analytical chemistry and nanoscience, and contributes to improving detection strategies and risk assessment frameworks for emerging contaminants.
Across these three axes, my research combines controlled laboratory experiments, advanced analytical techniques, stable isotope tools, and field studies at multiple spatial scales, within strongly interdisciplinary and international collaborations. Overall, my work aims to provide mechanistic and quantitative insights into anthropogenic perturbations of metal cycles, contributing to a better understanding of contaminant dynamics in the Anthropocene.
