Arnaud Lemarchand, research engineer at the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris, has been awarded the rank of Chevalier de l’Ordre National du Mérite by decree of the President of the Republic of May 21st 2021.

Recently appointed deputy director of the IPGP in charge of instrumentation, Arnaud Lemarchand was, for 15 years, the architect of the French volcanological and seismological observatories (266 autonomous telemetered stations, 221 repetitive measurement sites) and the associated database, which give the IPGP and INSU-CNRS a unique national specificity and international positioning. During this period, he has used his expertise and skills to transform these observatories into a structure at the cutting edge of sensor engineering and real-time data flows, making these data available to the scientific community as well as to the authorities, civil society and the media, thereby encouraging better management and perception of natural risks with the aim of promoting a culture of prevention and resilience.

In 2019, he was also a major player in the design, implementation and federation of the operational infrastructure of the new Réseau de Surveillance Volcanologique et Sismologique de Mayotte (REVOSIMA) on the 4th and latest of France’s active volcanoes, Mayotte.

This appointment is fully deserved recognition of 22 years of efficient and pragmatic work in the service of the community.
