The IPGP and the INGV Sign Memorandum of Understanding to Foster Scientific and Technical Collaboration

The Institut de physique du globe de Paris (IPGP) and the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) are pleased to announce the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on September 12th, 2024. This agreement marks the beginning of a five-year partnership aimed at promoting scientific and technical exchanges between the two leading institutions in the fields of Earth sciences.

The MoU establishes a framework for collaboration that will see the two institutions cooperate in areas of shared expertise, including volcanology, environmental studies, earthquake science, and risk assessment. Both IPGP and INGV have a long-standing history of excellence in these domains, and the agreement is expected to accelerate progress through the exchange of knowledge, data, and methodologies.

One of the key features of the MoU is the establishment of a biannual meeting, co-organized by both IPGP and INGV. These meetings will provide a platform for researchers, scientists, and technical experts from both institutions to collaborate and share their latest findings. The inaugural meeting will take place in Paris in September 2025, focusing on major research themes of mutual interest such as volcanology, environmental challenges, and seismic risks.

« We are excited to formalize this partnership with the INGV. Both our institutions are at the forefront of global research in Earth sciences, and this collaboration will strengthen our efforts to address critical scientific challenges related to natural hazards. »

Marc Chaussidon

Director of the IPGP

« The collaboration between the IPGP and the INGV has the potential to drive innovation and deepen our understanding of complex environmental and geological processes. This MoU paves the way for joint research initiatives that will benefit both our institutions and the broader scientific community. »

Carlo Doglioni

Director of the INGV
