Rationales

Our current understanding of the Earth system is challenged by the complexity of the processes we seek to unravel. Over the past two decades, advances in instrumentation have significantly enhanced our ability to observe natural phenomena with unprecedented precision. The growth of data availability has been accompanied by the creation of repositories that have evolved into curated databases serving the entire scientific community. Yet, our ability to fully interpret and model these high-resolution observations remains limited by the lack of a formalism that adequately captures the multi-scale and multi-physics couplings revealed by these data.

  • In the 1990s, the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris (IPGP) played a pioneering role in the development of inversion methods. It has also been a major driver in the creation of database infrastructures that provide access to a wide range of Earth system data (i.e., Gaia Data and Form@Terre projects).
  • Today, we are at a pivotal moment where expanding our expertise in artificial intelligence (AI) has become essential to address the next generation of scientific challenges. Emerging AI approaches offer a compelling opportunity to overcome key limitations in data analysis and modeling, opening new pathways for scientific breakthroughs.

To foster this transition and strengthen our collective expertise, we propose organizing a laboratory retreat dedicated to AI applications in Earth and planetary sciences.

The GAIA Lab Retreat will bring together researchers, engineers, and students from the institut de physique du globe de Paris (IPGP) and partner institutions for a week dedicated to Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications in Earth and planetary sciences hosted at the renowned École de Physique des Houches in the French Alps, this retreat will serve as a forum for reflection, exchange, and training around the rapidly evolving field of AI-driven geoscience.
