From 5 to 7 November 2025, the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris (IPGP) will host the first joint IPGP–INGV workshop on its campus, dedicated to developing scientific and technical collaborations between the two institutions.

This event is a follow-up to the memorandum of understanding signed in September 2024 between the IPGP and the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV). It is the first concrete milestone in a partnership between two major players in Earth sciences, aimed at pooling their expertise, infrastructure and research networks.

A strategic partnership in the service of Earth sciences

The collaboration between the IPGP and the INGV aims to strengthen synergies in key areas such as seismology, volcanology, scientific instrumentation and the study of extreme phenomena affecting the Earth system.
It is based on a shared vision: to better understand fundamental geophysical processes in order to improve prevention and resilience in the face of natural hazards.

Director of IPGP

We look forward to formalising this partnership with INGV. Both our institutions are at the forefront of Earth science research, and this collaboration will strengthen our efforts to address major scientific challenges related to natural hazards.

President of INGV at the time the partnership was signed. The current president is Fabio Florindo.

The collaboration between IPGP and INGV has the potential to stimulate innovation and deepen our understanding of complex geological and environmental processes. This protocol paves the way for joint research initiatives that will benefit both our institutions and the wider scientific community.

Three days of workshops and collaborative work

Organised over three days at the IPGP, this workshop will bring together researchers, engineers and scientific managers from both institutes to form thematic working groups:

  • instrumentation and data analysis;
  • volcanology;
  • tectonics and seismology;
  • extreme events and Earth system couplings.

The discussions will identify priority areas of research, initiate new joint projects and define a shared roadmap for the coming years.
This highlight will conclude with a plenary session and a presentation of the work carried out over the three days, demonstrating the richness and dynamism of this Franco-Italian scientific cooperation.

A lasting and open collaboration

This first workshop illustrates the shared desire of the IPGP and INGV to establish a long-term partnership based on shared objectives in research, observation and training.
By combining their expertise and resources, the two institutes aim to consolidate an active and united European scientific community in the face of the major challenges facing the planet.
