Physique des sites naturels

Les sites naturels qui nous entourent, auxquels nous sommes très attachés, parfois par des liens affectifs, suscitent aussi de nombreuses questions scientifiques. Que se passe-t-il devant nos yeux? Que va-t-il se passer après une perturbation? Ces questions que nous nous posons tous, que notre entourage nous pose, que la société ou des entreprises nous posent, ne sont pas des questions faciles. Alors qu’on considère souvent qu’il s’agit principalement de problématiques appliquées, liées par exemple aux ressources économiques ou aux sites pollués, les questions soulevées et la compréhension des processus mis en cause revêtent un caractère fondamental; il s’agit bien, pour tenter d’apporter des réponses, de questions délicates nécessitant de mobiliser les connaissances les plus modernes et les techniques les plus perfectionnées.

L’équipe “Physique des Sites Naturels“, pilotée par Frédéric Girault, s’est donnée pour mission de mettre en pratique sur les sites naturels les techniques de géosciences appliquées et les outils issus des recherches fondamentales de l’IPGP, et ainsi de faire vivre au sein de l’institut les sites naturels comme supports de base contribuant au dynamisme intellectuel et à une formation pluridisciplinaire, fondamentale et appliquée. Inversement, les sites naturels peuvent fournir des exemples de processus ou de situations qui vont constituer des défis intellectuels et techniques, qui, souvent, vont nécessiter de développer de nouvelles connaissances.

Le travail de l’équipe est organisé autour d’une thématique principale : l’étude des systèmes hydrothermaux en contexte de tectonique active, thématique mise en ouvre sur un chantier phare : l’Himalaya du Népal et sur plusieurs actions satellites.
