Razvan Caracas elected President-elect of the International Mineralogical Association

At the IMA General Meeting held last month in Nanjing, Razvan Caracas, CNRS senior researcher at the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris, was elected 1st Vice President of the International Mineralogical Association — the position that carries the presidency for the following term.

He joins a Council chaired by Nancy Ross as President, with Eiji Ohtani as Past President, Lee Groat as 2nd Vice President, Hiroaki Ohfuji as Secretary, Travis Olds as Treasurer, Michele Zema as Communication Officer, and councilors Ross Angel, Deshenthree Chetty, Shaunna Morrison, Vincent van Hinsberg and Encarnación Ruiz Agudo.

The IMA brings together the national mineralogical societies of some forty countries and sets the international standards for mineral nomenclature and classification. Its General Meeting is held every four years; the 2026 edition gathered the community in Nanjing, China.

Founded in 1958, the association covers a field that now extends from the deep interiors of planets and exoplanets to the chemistry of the early Earth, and from field and beamline work to first-principles simulation and machine learning.
