Events, Research

In his presentation devoted to the collision between India and Eurasia, Jean-Philippe Avouac explores the mechanisms that continue to shape the Himalayas and generate some of the largest earthquakes on Earth. Drawing on advances in plate tectonics, modern geodesy and satellite observations, he highlights how Earth sciences contribute to a better understanding of seismic hazards and to the development of more effective risk prevention strategies.

Founded in 1863 under the presidency of Abraham Lincoln, the National Academy of Sciences brings together some of the most distinguished scientists in the United States and worldwide to advance science and provide independent expertise on major societal challenges. Being invited to speak during its annual meeting represents a major international scientific distinction.
